Rugby World Cup 2011 – Nelson
Nelson New Zealand played host to several visiting teams during the Rugby World Cup 2011. Nelsonians were delighted to welcome Teams from Australia, Italy, Russia and USA during the period of 9 September to 23 October 2011.
The first ever game of Rugby played in New Zealand was played in Nelson and the Rugby world cup matches continued that long tradition.
The main legacy from being a Rugby World Cup 2011 host city was the recognition Nelson has the capacity and capability to host a major event, says the final event report to Nelson City Council’s economic development committee.
Nelson Mayor Aldo Miccio is confident Nelson can host other big events, with the next in line the city’s bid to host a share of the Fifa Under-20 World Cup football tournament being held in New Zealand in 2015.
“Now we have to believe in ourselves – this is the catalyst that we can try to be the best we can as a region, instead of accepting mediocrity,”
Nelson was the venue for three World Cup games and hosted the Italy, United States, Russia and Australia teams.
